There’s an old saying, popularised by The Breakfast Club: “you mess with the bull, you get the horns”. What does it mean? Not much really. Mostly that if you do something dangerous, you might get hurt. One dangerous thing you could do would be to miss the crazy, brass based, MC led explosion that is BULLHORN. Formed in 2011, these party animals combine virtuosic musicianship, crazy arrangements, catchy grooves and upbeat rhythms to whip the audience into a veritable frenzy. As adept at creating original tunes as they are at reimagining the likes of Bonobo and Easy Star All Stars, this nine piece behemoth is hell-bent on good times.
Since being established in 2011 BULLHORN have released two albums; Their debut self titled album (2012) and the new ‘Players/Sounds’ album (2014). They’ve also toured throughout Australia performing at many venues and festivals including Australasian World Music Expo (2014), The Falls Music & Arts Fest (2014 & 2015), Caloundra Music Fest (2014), Mullumimby Music Fest (2014 & 2015), Woodford Folk Fest, End Of The Line Fest, Island Vibe, Noosa Jazz Fest, Kuranda Roots, Bleach Fest, Easterfest, Redcliffe Fest, Home Fest, Caxton Fest and many others.
Their presence is formidable; armed with trumpets, trombones, saxophones, drums, the mighty sousaphone and the massive presence of Roman MC. As BULLHORN starts to play audiences will experience intoxicating grooves and huge rumbling sounds around them as they descend into a world of rich sonic textures created live, acoustic and real.
New Venusians is the brainchild of guitarist Ben Panucci. Main vocalists Meklit Kibret’s voice soars over gritty synths and syncopated guitar riffs, and harmonising perfectly with Christian Hemara’s backing vocals. This seven piece indie soul band, made up of some of Sydney’s finest musicians, blends elements of Jazz, electronica and soul with contemporary influences such as Little Dragon, FKA Twigs and Son Lux.
The debut single ‘Finding’ was eaten up by audiences far and wide and has set them in good stead for what is to be an exciting year for them. In Sydney they have already built a solid fan base for their tight and inspired live shows. The Venusian’s single ‘Keep Running’ was added to rotation on Sydney radio station FBi as well as being premiered by triple J’s Dom Allessio’s program Home & Hosed. Having recently finished recording their debut EP out in the latter part of 2015.
